Archdiocese settles two abuse cases
Last month, the Archdiocese of Chicago agreed to pay out $1.2 million and $1.4 million respectively to settle two cases of alleged clergy sexual abuse.
The first settlement involved a teenage boy who said he was abused by Daniel McCormack, the former pastor of St. Agatha Parish, who is serving a prison sentence after pleading guilty in 2007 to abusing five boys. McCormack did not plead guilty to abusing the boy in this settlement but the archdiocese conducted its own review of the case, with the help of a panel of retired Cook Count judges, and decided upon the settlement. McCormack also abused the boy’s older brother.
The second payment of $1.38 million went to a man who accused Father Chester Przybylo from 1987 through 1992. Przybylo was never an archdiocesan priest but ministered within the archdiocese. He now is pastor at an independent church in Winfield, Ill., which is not within the Archdiocese of Chicago.
The settlements will be funded by insurance and proceeds from the sale or lease of undeveloped property.
