JUBILARIANS Gold and Silver Archdiocesan priests celebrate jubilees

The Catholic New World salutes the priests of the archdiocese who are celebrating their silver and golden anniversaries this year. Most of the members of the Class of 1959 were ordained by Archbishop Albert Meyer on May 7 at Mundelein Seminary, while most of the Class of 1984 were ordained by Cardinal Bernardin May 19 in Mundelein.

50TH ANNIVERSARY

Father Michael J. Adams, 76, attended St Catherine of Genoa School. He was associate pastor at St. Margaret of Scotland (1959- 64), St. Matthias (1964-68) and St. Mary, Evanston (1968-72). He was executive secretary to the clergy personnel board and lived at St. Francis de Paula (1972-77). He was pastor of St. Gall (1977-92) and St. Mary Star of the Sea (1993- 2003). He lived at St. Michael, Orland Park (2003-2004) before he was administrator at St. Bede the Venerable (2004-05). He lived at Christ the King, Evergreen Park (2005-07) before becoming administrator at St. Albert the Great, Burbank (2006-08). He returned to Christ the King in 2008.

Father John F. Baldwin, 75, attended St. Clare of Montefalco School. He was associate pastor at Resurrection (1959-64) and St. Joseph, Round Lake (1964-68). He then entered the U.S. Navy as a chaplain. He retired as a captain in 1995. He was administrator of Our Lady of the Brook, Northbrook (2005) and St. Teresa (2006). He will celebrate his anniversary with a 2 p.m. Mass May 16 at St. Ita.

Father James M. Grace, 75, attended St. Genevieve and Resurrection schools. He was an associate pastor at St. Robert (1959-64) and St. Theresa, Palatine (1964-68) before becoming a U.S. Army chaplain. He retired in 1997. He will celebrate at 2 p.m. May 19 at St. Peter, Skokie.

Father Ronald N. Kalas, 76, attended Immaculate Heart of Mary School and DePaul Academy. He was associate pastor at St. Simeon, Bellwood (1959-66) and St. Raymond de Penafort, Mount Prospect (1966-81) and pastor at Mary Seat of Wisdom, Park Ridge (1981-2002). He also was assistant chancellor for the archdiocese (1968-72), co-chancellor (1972-81) and dean of Deanery II-E (1995-present). He will celebrate with a 5 p.m. Mass June 13 at Mary Seat of Wisdom.

Father Francis M. Kaucky, 76, attended Nativity of Our Lord and St. Roman schools. He was an associate pastor at St. Benedict (1959-65); St. Leonard, Berwyn (1965-69); St. Albert the Great, Burbank (1969-73); Our Lady of Loretto, Hometown (1973-79); and St. Francis Xavier, LaGrange (1979-80). He was pastor of St. Fabian, Bridgeview (1980-83) and chaplain at Palos Community Hospital (1984-87). He then was associate pastor at St. Symphorosa (1988-93) and at St. Damian, Oak Forest.

Father George W. Klein, 75, attended St. Pascal School. He was associate pastor at St. Gregory the Great (1959-65) and principal at St. Benedict High School (1965-82). He was associate pastor at Queen of Angels (1982-83) and pastor at St. Monica (1983-90). He was associate pastor at St. Joseph (1990-96) and St. Francis Xavier (1996-2004), both in Wilmette. He has been a resident at St. Philip the Apostle, Northfield, and pastor emeritus at St. Monica since 2004. He was a member of the Archdiocesan Priests’ Senate and president of the Archdiocesan Association of Catholic Secondary Schools. He will celebrate with an 11:45 a.m. Mass May 17 at St. Philip the Apostle.

Father Edward J. Maxa, 75, attended Our Lady of the Mount School, Cicero, and St. Odilo School, Berwyn. He was associate pastor at Our Lady of Lourdes, Keeler Avenue (1959-65), Epiphany (1965-69) and Blessed Sacrament (1969-72), where he was acting pastor (1972-74) and pastor (1974-87). He was associate pastor at Maternity BVM (1988-89), St. Francis of Assisi/Our Lady of the Angels (1989-95) and Immaculate Conception, 2745 W. 44th St, (1995-2007), where he will celebrate at a 2:30 p.m. Mass May 31.

Father Edward J. McLaughlin, 75, attended St. Frances of Rome School, Cicero. He was associate pastor at St. Juliana (1959-64). He was on the faculty at Quigley South and lived at St. Mary Star of the Sea (1964-68) and he was on the faculty at Niles College and lived at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Glenview (1968-75). He was associate pastor at St. Michael (1975- 79) and pastor at St. Maurice (1979-86) and St. Michael (1986- 2003). He has lived at Incarnation Parish, Palos Heights, since 2004.

Father James P. Roache, 74, attended St. Francis de Sales School. He studied at St. Mary of the Lake and Gregorian University in Rome. He was associate pastor or resident at Holy Name Cathedral from 1960-2001. He was secretary to Bishop Cletus O’Donnell, secretary for communications for the archdiocese, founding director of the Center for Pastoral Ministry and vicar general.

Father Edward P. Salmon, 75, attended St. Mel School. He was associate pastor at St. Gabriel (1959-65); St. Francis de Sales, Lake Zurich (1965-70); St. Mark (1970-75); and Our Lady of Ransom (1975-80) and St. Isaac Jogues (1980-85), both in Niles. He has been a resident at St. Giles Parish, Oak Park, since 1985. He was vicar for the diaconate community for 20 years, retiring in 2004. He also was a chaplain in the U.S. Navy Reserve (1961-89), and director of the Chicago Cursillo Movement (1968-76) and coordinator of the Association of Chicago Priests Hunger Fund (1975-now).

Father Richard J. Shannon, 75, attended St. Sabina School. He was associate pastor at St. Bride (1959-60) and Ss. Joseph and Anne (1960-67) and a U.S. Army chaplain (1967-71). He was administrator at St. Bernard (1975-82); associate pastor at St. Cletus, LaGrange (1982-83), and St. Ann, Lansing (1995-96); pastor at St. Walter (1983-95) and St. Patrick, Lemont (1996-2004).

Father Lawrence Springer, 75 attended Sacred Heart School in Englewood. He was associate pastor at St. Matthias (1959-64); St. Mary, Buffalo Grove (1964-69); Our Lady of Victory (1969-75); St. Athanasius, Evanston (1975-80); St. Joseph, Libertyville (1980-82); St. John Brebeuf, Niles (1982-88); St. Linus, Oak Lawn (1988-96); St. Zachary, Des Plaines (1996-2003). He will celebrate at the 11:30 a.m. Mass May 17 at St. Zachary.

25TH ANNIVERSARY

Father Kenneth J. Baker, 50, attended St. Clotilde School before entering Quigley South. He was associate pastor at Our Lady of Mount Carmel (1984-85); St. Athanasius, Evanston (1985-90); Queen of All Saints Basilica (1998- 2004) and St. John of the Cross, Western Springs (2004-now). He will celebrate May 17 at St. John of the Cross.

Father Philip E. Cyscon, 51, attended St. Joseph (Hermitage Avenue) and Quigely South. He was associate pastor at St. Linus, Oak Lawn (1984-90) and Ss. Faith, Hope and Charity, Winnetka (1990-92). He was pastor at St. Columbanus (1992-99) and Our Lady of Victory (1999-2004), then associate pastor at St. Francis Xavier, LaGrange (2004-08). Since then, he has served as pastor at Holy Innocents. He will celebrate at an 11 a.m. Mass May 31 at Holy Innocents.

Father Nicholas R. Desmond, 50, attended St. Zachary School, Des Plaines and St. Viator High School in Arlington Heights. He was associate pastor at St. Dorothy (1984-87) and Our Lady of Ransom, Niles. He was pastor at St. Francis of Assisi/Our Lady of the Angels (1991-2000) before being appointed pastor at St. Aloysius, where he continues to serve. He also was administrator at St. Philomena from January to June 2006, and has been administrator of St. Stephen of Hungary since December 2006. He served on the presbyteral council (1992-96, 2000-05) and has been dean of Deanery III-E since 2005.

Father Michael P. Enright, 50, was born in Evergreen Park and attended St. Christopher School. He served as associate pastor at St. Mark (1984-86) and St. Agnes of Bohemia (1986-92) and has served since then as pastor of Immaculate Conception, 2944 E. 88th St.

Father Michael A. Gabriel, 51, attended Most Holy Redeemer, Evergreen Park, and Brother Rice High School. He was associate pastor at St. Jude the Apostle, South Holland (1984-85) and Our Lady of the Angels (1985-86), then copastor of St. Francis of Assisi/Our Lady of the Angels (1986-91). He was pastor of Immaculate Conception, 2944 E. 88th St. (1991-92) and St. Ann, Lansing (1993-2004). He became a resident at St. James, 5730 W. Fullerton Ave., in 2005, and associate pastor in 2008. He will celebrate with a 3 p.m. Mass May 17 at St. James.

Bishop Gustavo Garcia-

Siller, 52, joined the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit in 1973 in Mexico City. He holds master’s degrees in philosophy, theology and psychology. He was ordained in Guadalajara and served his community as a spiritual director, teacher, formation director for several years. He served in his community’s leadership on the West Coast before he was named auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Chicago in 2003, where he leads Vicariate V.

Father Gary M. Graf, 50, attended Queen of Martyrs School in Evergreen Park and Quigley South. He served as associate pastor at Maternity BVM (1984-89) and was assigned to the archdiocesan Partnership in Mission program, where he served in Guerrero, Mexico, until 1994. He served as associate pastor of St. Joseph-St. Bartholomew, Waukegan (1994- 95). He became pastor of Holy Family, Waukegan in 1996 and served there until the creation of the Holy Family/Immaculate Conception/Queen of Peace Catholic Community of Waukegan in December 2006, where he continues to serve as pastor.

Father Charles P. LaChance, 54, attended Our Lady of the Ridge School in Chicago Ridge and St. Laurence High School in Burbank. He was an associate pastor at St. Paul of the Cross Parish in Park Ridge. He works at the Maryville Academy Scott Nolan Center.

Father Thomas E. Lamping, 55, attended St. Mary Immaculate School in Plainfield; Bertha-Hewitt High School in Bertha, Minn; and Indiana University. He served as associate pastor at St. Philomena (1984-90), St. Jerome (1990-92), St. Roman (1992-96) and Queen of Angels (1996-present).

Father Frank Latzko, 52, attended public schools in Des Plaines. He was associate pastor at St. Frances of Rome, Cicero (1984- 89), St. Mary of the Woods (1989- 91), Our Lady of Mount Carmel (1997-98) and St. John Fisher (1998-2004). He taught at Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary (1991-97). He was pastor at St. Eulalia Parish, Maywood (2004-08) before becoming pastor at St. Teresa of Avila.

Father Lawrence M. Lisowski, 50, attended St. Wenceslaus School and Quigley North. He was associate pastor at St. Mary, Buffalo Grove (1984-89); Infant Jesus of Prague, Flossmore (1989-95); and St. Francis Xavier, LaGrange (1995-2001). He has been pastor at Ss. Cyril and Methodius in Lemont since 2001. He will celebrate his anniversary at 3:30 p.m. June 7 at Ss. Cyril and Methodius.

Father Martin T. Marren, 50, attended St. Christopher School, Midlothian before entering Quigley Seminary South. He served as associate pastor at St. Germaine, Oak Lawn (1984-91); St. Barnabas (1991-97); and St. Gerald, Oak Lawn (1997-2004). He has served as pastor of St. Emeric, Country Club Hills, since 2004. He also has served on the Presbyteral Council and the Association of Chicago Priests’ Coordinating Board. He will celebrate with a 10:30 a.m. Mass May 31 at St. Emeric.

Father Gene F. Smith, 68, went to St. Laurence School and Mendel Catholic High School. He was associate pastor at St. John Fisher (1984-93); St. Mary Star of the Sea (1993-94); Old St. Patrick’s (1994-2000); Ss. Faith, Hope and Charity, Winnetka (2000-03); and St. Barnabas (2003-present).

Father Fred W. Tomzik, 50, attended Divine Savior School, Norridge and St. Patrick High School. He was associate pastor at Nativity of Our Lord (1984-89); Divine Infant, Westchester (1989- 96); and St. Eugene (1996-97). He is pastor of St. Louise de Marillac, LaGrange Park, (1997-now). He will celebrate with an 11 a.m. Mass May 17 at St. Louise de Marillac.
