CCHD grants awarded

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) of the Archdiocese of Chicago distributed grants totaling $530,000 to 21 community- based organizations Sept. 24 at Old St. Mary’s Church, 1500 S. Michigan Ave. Father John Canary, the archdiocese’s vicar general, awarded the grants at this bilingual event hosted by nationally recognized broadcaster and former Fox Sportsnet anchor John Morales. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development is the domestic anti-poverty, social justice program of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Their mission is to address the root causes of poverty in America through promotion and support of community-controlled, self-help organizations and transformative education. The following Chicago-based organizations received grants this year:

  • Brighton Park Neighborhood Council, $20,000 for foreclosure prevention
  • CAAAELII, $15,000 for immigration issues
  • Centro de Trabajadores Unidos, $20,000 for an immigrant worker’s project
  • Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, $15,000 for a speaker’s bureau
  • Chicago Worker’s Collaborative, $30,000 for workers’ issues
  • Community Organizing for Family Issues (COFI), $40,000 for education issues
  • Community Renewal Society, $25,000 for a senior ministries network project
  • Inner-City Muslim Action Network, $20,000 for violence prevention, Project Restore
  • Kenwood Oakland Community Organization, $15,000 for affordable housing
  • Lake County United, $40,000 for immigration issues
  • Lakeview Action Coalition, $15,000 for an affordable housing task force
  • The Latino Union of Chicago, $30,000 for workers’ issues
  • The Little Village Environmental Justice, $40,000 for environment issues
  • Mothers Opposed to Violence Everywhere, $20,000 for youth centers
  • Northwest Neighborhood Federation, $30,000 for violence prevention issues
  • Our Lady of Mount Carmel, $15,000 for a suburban base for social justice
  • Progress Center for Independent Living, $30,000 for disability issues
  • Restaurant Opportunities Center of Chicago, $15,000 for workers rights
  • South Suburban Action Conference, $15,000 for Immigrant and Recruitment
  • Southwest Organizing Project, $45,000 for violence prevention issues
  • TARGET Area Development Corporation, $35,000 for a multi-cultural theater company.
