Anonymous blessing
At a desert monastery, I had the opportunity to walk a labyrinth made of stones surrounded by exotic flora. I was completely alone, but far from lonely, enchanted by the mysterious beauty and contradiction of uninviting, captivating cacti amidst the craggy landscape. With each step closer to the center, I offered the prayer I have prayed daily.
Call to prayer for the synod finds a home online, in app
Cardinal Mario Grech, secretary-general of the Synod of Bishops, said in the process to create a more “synodal church,” one where every member contributes and all listen to each other, “we are touching something divine, and prayer is essential.”
Archdiocese launches prayer phone service during pandemic
Anyone who wants someone to pray with can now dial 312-741-3388 to reach “A Call to Prayer,” a phone line that is answered by volunteer prayer partners from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day.
Leaning on faith and intercessory prayer to fight cancer
When I learned I had breast cancer on Feb. 13, the first thing I did was cry. The second thing I did was text family and friends letting them know the news and asking for prayers. Later, when I calmed down enough to be understandable, I called asking for prayers.
Cross ministry promotes family prayer time
For the past six years, St. Nicholas of Tolentine parish and school have created special moments of prayer for families around the rosary and the cross.
Letter from Cardinal Cupich asking faithful to pray rosary in October for the universal church
Pope Francis is inviting Catholics throughout the world to pray the rosary every day during the Marian month of October. The Holy Father encourages us to join him in this act of solidarity and penance, asking the Mother of God and St. Michael Archangel to protect the church from the devil, who always seeks to separate us from God and from each other.
Archbishop Cupich’s reflection at inauguration of Gov. Rauner
(Jan. 12) Stresses which come with competition and rivalries oftentimes give rise to impulses of annoyance, antagonism, and anger. Irritations and frustrations come with the job of being in public life, of being in a leadership role in society.
New Year's Resolutions
Some years ago, when I was a seminary rector, I realized that some adjustment was in order when the faculty and I evaluated the suitability of seminarians for Holy Orders. The question was: Should this man be ordained a priest?
Prayers and bears for unaccompanied minors
Chicago-area Catholics are hoping that unaccompanied immigrant children will feel the love that comes with the more than 1,300 stuffed animals collected by their parishes. “The message we are sending is to embrace these children,” said Lupe Partida of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, 3200 E. 91st St., “to give them the sense of having encountered Jesus, who said ‘Let the children come to me.’”
