Catholic Relief Services urging local Catholics to contact Congress to reverse aid cuts
Leaders in the Archdiocese of Chicago’s efforts to be in solidarity with and serve poor and marginalized people are imploring local Catholics to give generously to Catholic Relief Services’ Lenten Rice Bowl collection this year and to reach out to Congress to reverse termination of lifesaving aid.
‘It could actually cause death’
Over the course of just a few weeks, the new administration suddenly halted foreign aid for 90 days, making dramatic cuts in funding and staff at the U.S. Agency for International Development. This has thrown the network of charities that administers our global humanitarian aid, including those funded by Catholics, into chaos. There is a human cost to acting so precipitously, which is partly why on Feb. 13, a federal judge ordered the administration to restore funding, given the “likelihood of a successful claim that the Executive’s actions violate the Constitution and statutes of the United States.”
CRS leader concerned by growing needs of refugees fleeing Ukraine
In response to more than 2 million refugees, primarily women and children, fleeing the conflict in Ukraine in recent weeks, the president and CEO of Catholic Relief Services said it is "alarming to see the scale of the suffering" in the region.
Local Catholics encouraged to join fight against global hunger
Chicago-area Catholics are joining Catholic Relief Services in their efforts to “Lead the Way” on global hunger, which has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In Iraq, aid groups face lockdown constraints trying to help displaced
A top Catholic humanitarian group expressed concern for the tens of thousands of Iraqis displaced inside their country and dependent on assistance, because access to them has become severely restricted due to COVID-19.
CRS health official keeps close eye on coronavirus
The coronavirus has the world’s attention. The disease, which surfaced in China last year, has infected more than 64,000 people and killed at least 1,383 by mid-February. It has spread to 24 countries and been labeled a global health emergency by the World Health Organization.
Local Catholic shares her gifts in Rwanda through CRS program
St. Clement parishioner Elizabeth Norden always admired the work of Catholic Relief Services, the official overseas relief and development agency of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and wanted to volunteer with them. She got her chance last August as a volunteer with its Farmer-to-Farmer Program in Rwanda.
Funding a humanitarian approach to migrants and refugees
On April 5, Bishop Joe S. Vásquez of Austin, Texas, who represents the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops as chairman of the Committee on Migration, offered a comprehensive overview of where the bishops stand in a letter to members of Congress. In that text, he advocated for a budget that reflects the values of our country, especially when it comes to the treatment of migrants and refugees. "Specifically this means," he said, "funding programs that protect the human life and dignity of immigrants, refugees, unaccompanied children and trafficking victims."
Operation Rice Bowl helps real people, speaker says
Thomas Awiapo knows just how important the contents of small containers are. Awiapo, who works for Catholic Relief Services in Ghana, only went to school when he was a boy because of the small snack the school provided at the beginning of the day.
