Staff members and volunteers at parishes around Chicago spent June 10-11 pulling tape off pews to make them available for seating again, removing stickers from floors and refilling baptismal and holy water fonts.
Parish and school openings: a report
While our parishes and schools closed quickly in March in response to rising rates of COVID-19 infection in Illinois, reopening has been a painstaking and well-monitored process. Following the reopening of our parishes for liturgical services in June, we closely tracked the effectiveness of the safety measures we put in place.
Parishes adjust religious education programs during COVID-19
Like many things, religious education is going to look a bit different at parishes in the Archdiocese of Chicago this year.
Delayed first Communions now resuming at parishes
Bella Leahy was supposed to receive her first Communion at St. Catherine of Alexandria Church on April 25. When COVID-19 put a temporary stop to public celebration of Mass in March, that was postponed until Aug. 8, when Bella and her family took part in one of four scheduled first Communion Masses at the parish.
St. Joseph Parish offers drive-in Mass for vulnerable parishioners
Every Sunday morning shortly before 7 a.m., cars begin arriving in the parking lots next to St. Joseph Church in Libertyville. But instead of getting out of their vehicles and heading inside the church for Mass, the people stay in their cars, tune their radios to 87.9 FM and get ready for the liturgy to begin.
Pandemic forces new ways of doing confirmation, first Communions
When the Archdiocese of Chicago notified parishes in late June that those certified for public Masses could begin planning socially distanced first Communions, confirmations and receptions into the Catholic Church, pastors and their teams swung into action.
With new rules in place, parishes reopen for Masses
When Doug and Bernice Benker learned that their parish, St. Elizabeth Seton in Orland Hills, was going to open its doors for Masses the weekend of June 6-7, they were among the first to register.
