Support for moms creates stability for generations
Raising children is the most challenging and most important job of any mother’s life. The future does begin with mom, as we nurture, feed, clothe, guide, teach and support our children. Just as Cardinal Cupich shared last Mother’s Day, we mothers must lean on our faith as we stand by our children, empowering them to live in community with their neighbors, face life’s challenges with grace and perseverance, and pursue their dreams.

The power of community
The spirit of generosity and kindness embraced me early on in my tenure at Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago and reinforced my faith that I had found my home.

Bringing hope to people experiencing homelessness
There are a lot of social service agencies, but none like Catholic Charities. Here, I live my faith. I walk in the door, and I love what we do every day serving people who are experiencing homelessness.

Creating opportunities for service and encounter
Just days have passed since Christmas, and yet what a dramatic transition we have experienced. The one we spent weeks preparing for, at last, has arrived. As the Scripture so recently shared, the shepherds, awestruck at having found the infant Jesus lying in a manger, left joyfully to spread the news. All who heard it were amazed.

Embracing the call to welcome
In the parable of the loaves and fishes, Jesus says to the Apostles, “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves” (Mt 14:16). His message is clear: We are called to reach out to others in need and share what we have. The more we open our hearts to others, the more God equips us to give.

‘Can I buy a chocolate bar?’
After buses from Texas began arriving in Chicago in August 2022, the first migrant who came through our doors at Catholic Charities’ St. Gall office was a young man who had walked from downtown Chicago to 55th Street and Kedzie Avenue.

Welcoming survivors to new life
Lucy* put her kids to bed. She prayed. Then she made a phone call. On the other end of the line, Aida Segura’s phone rang. It was late on a Saturday night — a time when the director for Catholic Charities House of Peace usually tries not to take calls. But sometimes she does, and something told her to answer.

Helping survivors of domestic violence find safety and healing
When survivors of domestic violence turn to Catholic Charities in crisis, we welcome them, and all that they carry, with arms wide open. Their journey toward recovery starts with safety. Over time, it moves toward long-term healing that carries on across generations. Accompanying them and their children as they transform their lives and move from doubt to strength, anxiety to hope and crisis to community is a privilege — and part of our unique calling here at Catholic Charities.

Allowing Mary, Undoer of Knots, to guide us
Leading the Midwest’s largest private human services provider through COVID-19, and now as we regain our footing amid high inflation and ever-growing need, is not for the faint of heart.
