U.S. bishops end agreements with federal government to serve refugees, migrant children
After almost 50 years of working with the federal government to resettle refugees and migrant children, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops announced on April 7 that it will not renew the cooperative agreements related to children’s services and refugee support.
Setting the record straight
This week I want to respond to the criticism some political leaders have leveled against the Catholic Church, charging that we are misusing federal funding for refugee settlement and that such ministries prove that the church is more concerned with its “bottom line” rather than the humanitarian service mandated by the Gospel.
Holy Thursday: Cardinal Cupich washes feet of Venezuelan refugees
Anderson and José, two of 12 Venezuelan refugees who had their feet washed by Cardinal Cupich during Holy Thursday Mass at Holy Name Cathedral, said the symbolic act that imitates the example of Jesus at the Last Supper was a new and emotional experience.
New program invites parishes to sponsor asylum-seeking families
Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago has been working with the more than 3,600 asylum seekers who arrived in Chicago on buses by mid-November seeking to make a new start in the United States. Now parishes can help by sponsoring such families and accompanying them in getting established.
Welcoming the stranger
Over the past few months, Catholic Charities has been reflecting on the following quote from celebrated theologian and prolific writer Father Henri Nouwen: “Community is first of all a quality of the heart. It grows from the spiritual knowledge that we are alive not for ourselves but for one another.”
Inspired by refugees
As director of Catholic Charities’ Refugee Resettlement Program, one of the “perks” of my job is welcoming refugee families at the airport. Recently, we welcomed an 11-year-old girl from Uganda so we could reunite her with her mother after five years of being apart.
Parish welcomes refugee families, helps them settle in
When Immaculate Conception-St. Joseph Parish, 1107 N. Orleans St., sponsors a refugee family arriving in Chicago, parishioners provide more than help with rent and furnishings.
Emergency multitasking: Vatican says keep all vulnerable in mind
Internally displaced people — those forced to flee their homes, but who do not cross into another country — still often need protection and special assistance, including from the church, said a new Vatican document.
Immigrants, refugees face heightened insecurity during pandemic
Immigrant and refugee communities face uncertainty and stress every day, and the coronavirus pandemic has increased that, causing people who minister to immigrants and refugees to worry.
Walk in solidarity with refugees at Christmas
Sometimes overlooked in the idyllic images of the Christmas story is the brief, touching tale told in the Gospel of Matthew: the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt.
